10 Tips For Positive Parenting

1. When your child wants to show you something, stop what you are doing and pay attention to your child. It is important to spend frequent, small amounts of time with your child doing things that you both enjoy.

2. Give your child lots of physical affection – children often like hugs, cuddles, and holding hands.

3. Talk to your child about things he/she is interested in and share aspects of your day with your child.

4. Give your child lots of descriptive praise when they do something that you would like to see more of, e.g., “Thank you for doing what I asked straight away”.

5. Children are more likely to misbehave when they are bored so provide lots of engaging indoor and outdoor activities for your child, e.g., playdough, colouring in, cardboard boxes, dress ups, den making, etc.

6. Teach your child new skills by first showing the skill yourself, then giving your child opportunities to learn the new skill. For example, speak politely to each other in the home. Then, prompt your child to speak politely (e.g., say “please” or “thank you”), and praise your child for their efforts.

7. Set clear limits on your child’s behaviour. Sit down and have a family discussion on the rules in the home. Let your child know what the consequences will be if they break the rules.

8. If your child misbehaves, stay calm and give them a clear instruction to stop misbehaving and tell them what you would like them to do instead (e.g., “Stop fighting; play nicely with each other.” Praise your child if they stop. If they do not stop, follow through with an appropriate consequence.

9. Have realistic expectations. All children misbehave at times and it is inevitable that you will have some discipline hassles. Trying to be the perfect parent can set you up for frustration and disappointment.

10. Look after yourself. It is difficult to be a calm, relaxed parent if you are stressed, anxious, or depressed. Try to find time every week to let yourself unwind or do something that you enjoy.

Scooter Help!

Hi everyone.
I am looking to get Jack a scooter but can't decide on which one is best suited for him. I don't want him to outgrow it to soon and I would like something which is stable and not going to fall apart weeks after getting it.
There are so many to choose from; I wondered if you has any advice or tips which could help me narrow my choice down. Below are a few which I thought might be suitable. If you have any advice or suggestions please feel free to e-mail or comment on this post.

First up is George Tri Scooter
Only £24.99
Not sure if this would be well made well as it's only a character scooter and made from a lot of plastic! But I know Jack would love George Pig on the front. Only draw back is - it doesn't have adjustable height,
Website states its for ages 3 years and over.

Only £17.99
Could it be cheap and cheerful; not lasting more than a few months?
Nice bright colours and has adjustable handlebars. Again website states it is suitable for children aged 3 years and over.

Another one on my list is, Ozbozz My First Scooter 3 in 1
Only £20.42
Tick's all my boxes; has 4 wheels for extra stability, grows with the child, can be folded down, wheels can be removed to create a 3 wheel scooter and a 2 wheel scooter. Website says it's suitable for children 2 years and over.

Only £24.99
Now this looks like something Jack would enjoy riding on. It is height adjustable, has 3 wheels for stability and also has flashing lights! Only downside - this is battery powered and could use a lot of batteries to keep the light going! Website states it for children who are 3+.

Happy New Year & Potty Training.

Happy New Year everyone. I hope 2011 brings lots of happiness and joy. I have a feeling this is going to be a good year!!
I have decided to start potty training Jack now that he has turned 2 and tells me when he has gone to the toilet. I brought Gina Ford's book "Potty Training in one week" as I needed to get an insight into how to begin!
She suggests getting two potties and a padded toilet seat. I have been looking around and there are hundreds! I was hoping to ask for some advice. I don't want to get one which is rubbish and Jack refuses to sit on it or scare him!
So, can you please share which ones you used and how you got on with them.
Also, is there any advice you can share with me? Jack is the first boy in our family for 3 generations so my Mum and Nan don't have a clue about boys! Are boys and girls the same when it comes to potty training?
HELP!!
